A Growing Field

Part of this article that I have read is about a farmer name Christian from Canterbury, Connecticut. He grows mostly flowers and green vegetables like lettuce, arugula, kale, and bok choy. Christian makes his on soap in the winter; he makes the soap with dried herbs, olive oil, buttermilk, and honey. That is how he makes his soap. Christian says farmers don’t really have a day off. He works everyday that is what he is trying to say.

Long time ago farming was a family business, but in these days it isn’t like that. Christian is an organic farmer. An organic farmer has to meet strict criteria to be a certified organic farmer. Organizations that are certified go to farms and inspect the farm to see if the farmer is meeting the requirements. They also check if they are following the rules. Since we are talking about organizations, the oldest certified organization is the CCOF and was founded in 1973.  

                        If you want to be a farmer the best way to educate yourself is by working at farm. The year 2007 Michigan State University (MSU) got classes for an organic farmer. The class took a year. The things they teach in the classes are about soil and crop management, farm planning, and marketing.

Caring for the Big Guys

This article that I have read is about veterinarians. A certain veterinarian name Bob Rednour who owns a Large Animal Veterinary Service in Youngsville, North Carolina. They treat large animals such as horses and other large animals.  He graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He has an assistant who he teaches and her name is Meg Johnson. Both veterinarian love to treat large animals, they also like what they do.

A typical day for these veterinarian starts with appointments, most of the time they travel to farms to see animals and treat them. The kinds of treatments they do are wounds, diagnose diseases, and help with difficult births of animals. The kinds of animals they treat are cattle, pigs, sheeps, llamas, goats, snakes, giraffe, etc. They also sometime treat animals that are in circuses.

There are not a lot of veterinary schools in the country people have to compete to get spots in the school. Like there could be 1000 people applying in a school and only 70 can be accepted from that school. So, it like competing to be one of the people to get into a veterinary school. When someone gets accepted into a veterinary school they study for four years to earn a doctor of veterinary medicine degree and they also have to get an undergraduate degree. That’s what the article that I read is about.

This article “YOU ARE WHAT YOU E-MAIL” is about e-mailing. When e-mailing someone, the person that you are e-mailing could see who you are. Some people talk like they are text messaging, when you are text messaging you are making words into acronyms. That could be good in text messaging or social networking or e-mailing your friends. But it isn’t good when you are e-mailing a teacher, professors, employers, etc. When you are e-mailing them like you are texting they might not take you serious or they won’t understand what you talking about. In the article it gives you eight tips to help you write a better e-mail, the tips are put your bottom line in the subject line, lead with the most important information, choose your content and tone carefully, treat your e-mail like an English paper, proofread, add a signature to your message, respond quickly to others e-mails, and cover one topic per e-mail. Those are eight tips that will help you create a better e-mail. 

Navigating the College Fair

This article is about going college fair. College fair is a place where different colleges come and answer questions and give information about that college. The people who answer questions and give information about a specific college are college representatives. College fairs can be held anywhere. Some places it could be at are school gyms, conference rooms, convention centers, etc. There could be hundreds if colleges at a college fair. When you go to college fairs, people suggest you should visit the schools that you are interested in first. In this article they say that students are not afraid of asking questions when they are with their parents, but the students should ask the question and not relying on their parents to ask for them. When you talk to any colleges at a college fair you should make that time as if it is an interview, and ask questions. “The best questions are the one’s tailored specifically to your needs”, that is what the article says. When you go booth to booth you should be aware that you might fill out contact cards. Contact cards are cards that you fill out, so the college could send you more information about a specific programs, scholarships, etc. some college fairs you don’t have to fill out contact cards, you put your information in a computer and it prints out a barcode and the booths scans the barcode and they already have it. This makes it easier instead of filling out contact cards. When you are finish with the college fair you should more information about the colleges you want to go to. That is what the article was mostly talking about. 

Top Floor, Please

This article is about a lady name Debbie Grant. She is a manager for a four star hotel. She started off at a community college but she felt it wasn’t for her. So, she decided to drop out of the community college. She didn’t know what to do, her friend told her about a job opening at a hotel. She was interested in the job so she visited the hotel. The director of the hotel told her that the job will contain booking meetings and banquets. She told herself she couldn’t do it, but the director liked her personality and her enthusiasm. The director told her that she could do it. She got the job and in March 2008 she got promoted as a regional director of sales and marketing. She became all this without a college degree.

Hotels employment is expected to go up by 13.9 percent from 2006 to 2016. More hotels are being built and therefore more jobs will be open. Hotel’s hire a lot of young and first time workers who works part time. There are many jobs you could work as at hotels. Debbie Grant suggest that first time workers should start at the front desk, because there are more opportunities for positions in that area. When you do your best at hotels they award you or recognize you someway. Hotels are open everyday/ every night and don’t close. So you could work night times holiday’s or even weekends. That is what this article is mostly about. 

GAME ON!!!

This article is about people becoming game developers. Game developers are usually people who are into games and like to play games; it could be from video games to computer games. Becoming a game developer is not an easy job. You have to have many skills on a computer and imagination skills. There are different kinds of jobs in creating a game. The kinds of jobs are animators, artists, game designers, and game programmers. Game developers take almost a year in creating a single game. You could major in college to be a game developer. Games are sold in stores and played by people or young adults. The cost of making a game is about $10 million. That is what this article is mostly about. 

Obama vs. McCain

This article is about Election Day. The two presidents that are going against each other are Obama and McCain. They are going around the United States trying to get peoples votes for Election Day which is on November 4, 2008.  The two presidents have three big issues to solve for the United States and they have different views for solving these three issues. The three issues in the United States are the economy, the war, and the gas prices. This article mostly talks about what the two presidents are going to do for the U.S. Obama says he is going to lower taxes for poor and middle class families, but the higher class families keep the taxes the same. He also would get the troops that are in Iraq back within the 18 months of taking office. He says it taking too much money going to war. McCain says he is leaving the troops there.  Obama is going to talk face-to-face with the Iran’s leaders. McCain says it will make the United States weaker if they talk face-to-face, he wants war. McCain and Obama say they both are want alternative energy, but McCain wants drill for oil. That is what the article is talking about.
